“You need a teaching coach who understands the game of basketball, not just some guy coming on the court talking about Xs and Os.” Oscar Robertson March Madness! Is it just in basketball, or is it a time when we start to panic about getting everything done before summer comes along? The theme for this month is chosen to inspire us to start reflecting on our performance in the teaching and learning game while considering changes to our instructional strategy playbooks. The quote above alludes to the importance of relaying the purpose behind course content and providing the opportunity to apply it so students learn it better. Context, practice and application are essential for effective learning. I encourage you to review the articles provided in the SoTL Corner of this and past newsletters for helpful ideas to reinvigorate your teaching skills to support students earning better stats in their learning game. Don’t forget to utilize the 20 Minute Mentor Commons from Magna Publications for short educational videos to guide you through new approaches or skills for teaching (click on blue Magna icon in Pulse top-right corner to access). If you would like a coach or trainer to help improve your instructional performance, we in CTL would love to fill that position for you. We can provide resources for practicing or huddle with you to discuss strategy or even run a few drills to test out new moves with you. We won’t referee or put you in the penalty box for making a bad play. We will be your understanding coach or cheerleader in that effort. We would love to know how we can influence your teaching game strategy. Who are the new players on the DMU team? We have been able to introduce some of them in this newsletter. I want to shout out to the most recent group of new instructors who took advantage of participating in the CTL sponsored online course “Principles of Effective College Teaching” who asked to continue meeting as a learning community each month to practice and discuss a variety of educational topics and activities. What a great team of lifelong learners who want to improve their game for the students! I look forward to continue working with them. If you are interested in joining us, just contact me. And keep an eye out for an exciting new development in the CTL – coming soon! We are here on the sidelines to support you – just call us into the game! Continued success, Kerry Dr. Kerry Gregoryk, CTL Director Upcoming Workshops
